I got this question fro Ian via my e-mail and I posted here so other can see it.

"Hi there,

In your Dynam Vortex review... u mention using trnity oil... Where/ which part did u apply the oil?
Also can u let me know the nature of the "trinity oil" that u used? just a lube? ..

Thanks

Regards,
Ian "

Hi Ian,
I placed a couple of drop in the swaftplate area. You have to do it from the bottom.

The Trinity oild is mostly used in the RC car hobby. If you buy it from a LHS or RC Internet stores, they are mostly manufactured for RC toys. There different kinds. You can buy the one that is for bearings. It says on the box. Hop this help.

Now assuming one is a total n00b, would one of these be suitable to learn on?

Ive got the Realflight G1 simulator, but I don't know what controls do what actions. And I usually do better with something real anwyays-the thought of breakage and real money inspires me to concentrate harder.

Can these be flown outside with a little wind or are they indoors only?

08-18-2006, 08:24 PM
Hi Rick,
A coaxial like Vortex 37 is for the newbie to start. It is stable and move slower than the single rotor heli. Because its light weight and low headspeed, it does not handle strong winds good. But for a calm day, as you can see in one of the pics, you can fly it ouside. I got it as high as the roof of my two story home. I normally fly it outside early in the morning whe the wind is not yet picked up. But this one is going to entertain you well in this comming Windter when you cannot fly bigger helis outside. It is great heli.

Does the radio have a trainer port? If so, what cable would one use for a sim like FMS? Is it compatible with another radio type? I ordered one from BPHobbies this week, FedEx tracking has it scheduled for delivery today....

Hi m_s_ferguson, I don't see any outlet from the back of the Radio for the interface cable for a SIM.

Just unboxed my Vortex and found a s-video type connection on the lower left side of the radio. A coworker has his radio and cable from a Century Hummingbird at work. Connect his cable to the NE-KO 4 radio from Dynam and it works fine with FMS through the serial port. Now I have to find that cable. May have some fun with a scope and find the pinout and make a sound card interface cable until the serial PIC cable is delivered. Heliworld sells the cable for $20 USD.

m_f_ferguson,
You are right I just looked at mine again I saw it on at the bottom on one of th side. I was looking at the back as most of the Radio has it on the back. $20 is not bad for the cable. I bought mine for $40 to use with my Blade CP radio. If a cable works for FMS, it might work with Clearview as well. Good to hear you are on the way to have fun.

Hope this is the right place for this question and sorry if its long..

I just saw for the first time a post at rc groups about the Dynam Vortex. Right now I currently play around with the Picco Z From from RS (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2431387&cp) and the Mini Blade Runner also from RS (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2260582&cp=2032062.2032402.2032406&pg=2&parentPage=family) both really fun 2 cha. Toys.

I was on the verge of buying a used Blade CX off of eBay until I saw the thread about the Dynam Vortex.

I guess my biggest question is would this be a better option than the BCX for the money?

I would get new vice used, but my biggest fear is lack of readily available parts and up-grades to metal for parts that break frequently. If I was to get a BCX I know I could go to my LHS and find anything I need to keep flying.

Do you guys see aluminum upgraded parts being something they come out with in the future?

In your opinion would this Heli be a good stepping stone up from the current toys I still have a blast with?

Thanks

Hi Phenom,
You are right about upgrades for Blade CX. I have not seen any upgrade now for Vortext 37. Blade CP and Blade CX come out really strong in the market because Herizon Hobby's marketting strategies. Most of LHS carry both Blade CX and CP, parts and upgrade. Dynam Vortex 37 came out with nothing close to Blade CX marketting effort.

I wouldn't compare Dynam Vortex 37 with Blade CX, but Eksy Lama in terms of price and quality. They are more in the line. Some of the parts are exchangable. But all Blade CX, Vortex 37, Esky Lama are good coxail helis for beginners. Since they are a beginner heli and you will move on really quickly to bigger and better helis, I personally would not put too much upgrade on it.

If you are serious about the hobby, I would also encuorage you to look at Esky Honeybee FP, CP2, Blade CP or evern bigger helis.

Thanks for the info. I was really exited when I found out about the Vortex because the price is right and its seems very similar to the bcx .. Then I got to thinking about replacement parts etc. I really like the idea that if I break something on the bcx I can drive down the road to a LHS and pick up parts to keep flying. If I cant convince my wife to go for the BCX then I think ill def go for the Dynam.. Thanks

You sound like a good plan. It is always best to get the lady into the same hoby we are in or she'll never let you spend too much time or money on the heli. I hear all sorts of interesting stories. It is her competition for you attention :) So get her one and then you both can fly together. A couple of us here, both wife and husband fly helis. But not mine :(

We, RC heli pilots, seem not to be very patient when it comes to buying heli replacement part so it will be helpful to have a LHS carries parts close by. However, some good hobby internet stores such as http://www.bphobbies.com/view.asp?id=V665645 now ship their products really fast too. Can't wait to hear and see some pictures you flying the Blade CX.

I guess this thing isn't as popular as the others since there aren't too many messages .... in any case I just picked up a Dynam Vortex. I've NEVER flown a heli (or a plane) but have dabbled in some RC Cars.

I have a couple REALLY noobie and probably dumb questions.

The battery has 2 connectors, one works fine in the charger the other one just sorta dangles. What is that for?

When you put the battery in the holder is it all the way to the back of the helicopter or towards the front? No matter where I put it, it SEEMS to balance (using my fingers from the manual discussion).

I'm only using it in the house. I charged the battery and was trying to get the feel of the "lift". As it lifts it doesn't seem to go straight up but seems to "skate" forward or left or right. Is this normal. I wasn't applyimg too much power.

To, er, get it up, do you just apply a lot of power or slowly apply power ? It looks like (and I might be wrong) that it will just rise out of control.

Like I said (and as you can tell) I have no idea what I'm doing yet but from what I read about these dual rotor models they should be really easy to get in the air. I needed a new toy to keep me occupied on cold winter days and having this thing buzz around my house looked like fun. :)

Ranger

The red one is for use on the supplied charger and the other is for balancing the cells. Unless you have a balancer or balance charger just let it hang there.

I have a Twister bell, and it's charger uses the little white connector and not the red one!!

If you pick the heli up by the flybar on top, with two fingers and see how it balances, make sure it is not nose or tail heavy. If it is, move the battery forward or back to suit.

when you get the heli light on it's feet you can use the transmitter trims to stop it going in any direction as you apply throttle.
It will probably move around a little until you get it off the ground a foot or so.
Just apply throttle slowly until you get a little used to it , then a little faster
Remember, if you crash, bring you throttle back down immediately or you will burn out the 4 in 1 (the little box in front) with the light in it.

Welcome to HeliTown! Ranger was quick to take your questions so if you still have other questions, feel free to ask. Take the time to trim and make sure that the swashplate is level before you lift it off.

Thanks for the replies. 2 more basic questions.

1) What does the "RUDDER" control on the Dynam Vortex transmitter do? It doesn't move any of the servos and there obviously isn't any tail motor so what is changing?
2) When I push up on the stick to increase speed the LED's on the 4&1 sometimes goes from green to red. Obviously it's some sort of warning but for what?

My major gripe about this heli is the plastic canopy & body is soooooo thin. Cracks like an eggshell without too much effort. Scotchtape helps. :)

Thanks!

It does move the rudder by slowing or speeding (not sure bottom or upper rotor blades) not the servo.

It is normal in any 4 in 1 unit - it tells you that you are close to the max of the throttle.

This is one of the weakness about the Vortex I wrote in the review. However, any small heli like that has to have very thin canopy to keep the weight off. I have Blade CX2 and it cracks too. I think Esky Lama canopy is made of soft plastic and it is more durable.

I just recently received my vortex. I have had about 5 flights and the battery seems to be getting weaker with each flight. I seem to get about 5 minutes good flight time and than I am limited to a hover of about 1foot for maybe a minute or so. Is this common. Also I noticed that the battery has a white 3 pin connector that does not seem to plug in anywhere. What is that coonector for. Thanks.

Welcome to HeliTown mascari.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds like you have pretty much killed your battery through over discharging. There should be a big warning on that but usually isnt. By the time you start to notice any loss of power it's probably too late and then it's a matter of degrees. You should never discharge a lipo below 3v/cell. My lama v3 flys for 8mins on 600 mAH out of a 800 mAH pack. I could use the last 200 mAH but the packs don't last as long (in cycles) on all my helis I try to land with 20-30% left as a safety factor. Fortunately those packs are inexpensive which is better than killing a 6S pack.

Grettings from switzerland. Just go a vortex couple of days aga and have lot of fun. 3 Qs from a rookie to expert: 1) the lipo, should I leave it charged even if I dont flight? 2) Do you know if any alu upgrades exists for this heli, similar to what graupner do (seems to be same mechanic( 3) What is the next step after coaxial? What is the best next $$$/level heli to flight then outside ? Thanks friends and all the best

swatson144

Welcome to HeliTown ollivier74.
If I'm going to fly again in the next couple days I recharge after the flight. If I know it is going to be several days I recharge and then run it for 3-5 mins to get it down to storage voltage. ~3.6 V/cell (well at least I should).

I can't really see metal upgrades on my Lama. They are pricey and I can't see any performance or economic gain, as the price for stock parts is so inexpensive. If I ever break the inner shaft ass'y I'll probably replace it with AL as it seems a bargain. I haven't seen any vortex upgrades and have no clue if you can use any of the other parts.

Next heli.. several variables there. Lot's of threads for 1st heli, etc. Probably best to read over the threads in micro, mini, and large, to see what size and heli fits your perception of what you need.

Sorry to say that the dynam orbiter doesn't have a tail rotor.

It just looks like it. I guess if there was one motor driving the two rotors...then yes it should have one.

I would love to have a larger than CX coaxial. I saw the pics of the 400 size but is that someone's homemade heli, or is that something you can buy?

Hi I have a Dynam Orbiter with a problem, can anybody help?
The problem I have is an instability problem, If you can imagine picing the copter up at the top of the mast and then slowly swinging it in a circular motion, this is how it often flies making it very hard to control. This has only happend since I replaced the inner shaft and the blades, any ideas?

eddiemoth
10-01-2007, 07:40 PM
Cozza,
That is it. You just answered yourself - the shaft and blades! Are shaft and blades are new? I would spin it up on the grown and inspect to see if the shaft is perfectly straight.

Cozza
10-02-2007, 10:51 AM
The shaft looks straigt, I tried to disconnect one motor at a time and this all looks straight, what effect would the the weights on the flybar have ?

Sometimes the heli will be perfectly stable and then a sudden input into the controls will unsettle the copter and it will perform this circular instability.

if you were to put a pen pointing straight down from the battery it would draw a perfect circle on the floor. AAAAAAAG

Hello to all Dynam Vortex fans
Here are the changes I've made to my Vortex 37:
-Lipo battery 7.4 V 800 mAh, E-flite ref: EFLB0990. much easier to insert and no dramatic change in weight (1 gr).
-Upper and lower blades (A and B), XTreme (made for Lama Esky),
ref: ESL005/6. harder and better uplifting profile that largely compensate for weight difference.
-lower rotor head, Esky Lama V4, ALU ref:EK5-0207. fits perfectly.
-Swashplate ALU, E-flite BCX/2 ref: EFLH1246, with E-flite Servo pushrod
ref: EFLH1218 because linkage ball are smaller and pushrod needs to be a bit longer, but changed upper swashplate balls for bigger ones to fit the Dynam ones for the blades control.
Hope this may help anyone.
Cheers

Hi everyone,

Just bought a Vortex. When the copter lifts off, it starts to occilate front to rear. This has now destroyed the 2 sets of blades that it came with. Is there a reason that the 2 sets of blades will contact each other? Do I need to set something up? I am a noob at RC stuff. The main shaft appears to be straight. I noticed that the flybar only has 1 connecting link. In the parts listing, the flybar only appears to have 1 link, so I would assume this is normal? This thing is supposed to be easy to fly, but it has always had this occilation since new. When I lift off, I do it very gradually, & as it leaves the ground, the occilating starts, then the upper & lower blades contact each other & shatter. What am I missing? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, Russ

eddiemoth
01-22-2008, 08:16 PM
bigmac1, welcome to HeliTown and RC heli hobby. The one link on the flybar is normal. Don't worry about that. Not sure why your blades touch each other - bottom and top. Check the blade grips to see if there is anything missing.

If it is your first RC toy, a training grear would help. Try to trim it very well on a smooth suface like a hard woodfloor. Get your center of graverty centered. It is hard to learn on a carpet than a hardwood floor as it tend to stumble a lot on the carpet. When taking off, use throttle a little so it takes off above the ground effect and use the stick to correct and keep it in one place. Don't do it outside. It does not handle winds good because it is very light. Let me know if you have other questions.

bigmac1
01-31-2008, 03:39 PM
Yes, the 4 switches along the bottom. On another forum, it showed how to have them set. According to them, the throttle switch is the only one that should be in the normal position. Mine did not come set like this. I also read somewhere else, that these switches do nothing on a 4 channel system, only work on a 6 channel. Kind of confusing. I'm waiting for some more rotor blades to try out the new settings. Wondering if anyone else has more info on this?

Thanks, Russ

eddiemoth
01-31-2008, 04:02 PM
Hmmm...on my TX, the throttle is REV, Ail is REV and Ele is NOR. This gives you a better picture here. http://www.helitown.com/Vortex2%20016.jpg I did not change anything before i took the picture for the review and that was how they were set up from the factory.

It is true that the 4 channel is not working as it is for Rudder and for a coaxial it does not have Rudder - no tail rotor. Aileron is on channel 1, Elevator is on channel 2 and throttle is on channel 6.

Whatever you do, just don't change the throttle switch when the power is connected on your heli.

Hi.
Just bought a new Vortex37. Very hard to control, wobbles all over the place. Have moved the battery about, but makes little diffrence. I notice the Green light on the reciever changes to red when I throttle up. Might this be the problem?
