I am going to be the first to add a post to this thread by saying a little about me.
My other interests apart from heli's are dogs, I used to breed chihuahua's and owned 2 dobermans.
I have shown horses (Anglo Arabs) in-hand.
I love art and painting especially acrylics, I am probably rubbish but I try.
I am no gardener like cmaxim but I have a cacti collection that I am proud of.
So thats me and my hobbies anyone wants to chat about anything I have mentioned get posting or better still get posting about what your hobbies are, thats what Helitown is about a community who chat and make friends and learn something along the way.

Hi Sue,
Thanks you for sharing your interest. I am very proud of you and others pets lovers because they must be very patient and caring, not me. I can't take care of any pets. I can only take of garden because it is much easier than taking care of pets. My sons loves pets and they used to ask me if they can have a dog. I guess you know my answer "NO". Now my first son has his own place so he own a dog name "Charlie". When my first son came to visit us, I like to give food to his dog ( human's food). My son told me that it is bad for Charlie and I don't know how can it be bad for a dog to eat human's food. Well, that is me. :o

Hi Chinda, :)
I can understand if you love gardening then dogs are not really for you, gardens and pets don't go together. :(
I believe that a dog like any animal needs a great deal of attention, training, grooming and knowledge not only of the breed but of nutrition and health care, oh and lets not forget money for vets bills etc.
I think you were right in not getting a dog for your sons, my oldest chihuahua Mindy was 18 when she died, now how many children are going to look after their dog that long, they will grow up, go to college and maybe move away from home, then it is usually down to mom to look after it and you would not have been happy with that.
Your son feeds his dog correctly in only giving his dog, dog food, but if when charlie comes to visit you he gets a few human left-overs as treats then there is nothing wrong with this.
I think your son is just being very careful.
A dog by nature is a scavenger who in the wild will feed on almost anything edible.
One of mine used to love raw carrots so if I was slicing a carrot I would give her a small piece.
For an elderly dog chicken (not fried) and rice is very mild on their stomachs and does not put on weight.
The only thing I would never give a dog is human chocolate which is a big no no.
Many many years ago before the pet industry got to be a multi-million dollar concern most dogs were fed on scraps and left-overs.

Hi Sue,
Thank you for the great information about dog. Before I thought that my son just spoiled his dog and what a big deal dog liked my food. Because I remember my parents who live in Cambodia have a few dogs and those dogs eat whatever my parents feed them. And those dogs live for a long long time. Now I start to believe my son about what to feed his dog after you shared information. Once again, thank you.

I just have mutts now. Sue is right about scraps it's no big deal health wise. For inside dogs though it has an ill effect on behavior, in that it teaches them to beg. My inlaws love to pass my dogs scraps, and they beg horribly after they are gone for a while and eventually relearn it is pointless. I love having a dog around my oldest is 15 yrs and the young one is going on 2. I'll probably always bring in a pup when the dog starts going down hill. Sure makes the whole house breaking and fundamental training easier.

You touched on a subject that really annoys me and thats begging for food.
there is nothing worse than a dog getting in your face because you have a biscuit or something.

If an animal is going to be given a treat or scrap then it has to do something for it and it is given to the animal in its bowl. Dogs are very manipulative and I have seen people who do nothing all day but run around after their dogs, if a person like that owned a serious Alpha male then they would be in a lot of trouble, couple that with a large dog and you have a potential lethal weapon.

And now I an going to say something that will have people after my blood, a dog should be treated like a dog and not like a child, dog attacks on children and anti-social behaviour just would not happen if the animal knew its place in the pack (human family) and that place is at the bottom.
OK rant over but its your fault steve for saying the word "begging"

That's just wrong. They certainly are a rung up from the cat! :P

You are right about discipline they require being taught and made to behave properly. They are happier for it. So are children. If either is not started right so that they get praised for proper conduct and scolded for inappropriate behavior. That just leaves constant scolding and general unhappiness, which just becomes the norm and the cycle runs away. It's very sad to see ill behaved children or dogs because both just want so badly to please.

Hi Glen, :D
Its great to take in a dog nobody wants and give it a good home, I had one rescue chihuahua called Tasha, she was very nervous when I first had her but with patience and care she got over her fear of people, although she would never go up to anyone but family members at least she would sit in the room when friends came round.
I never allowed anyone to touch her unless she made the first move so she felt safe and secure.

Hi Eddie :D
I don't know much about miniature pinschers but I have been told they behave like thoroughbred horses so they would be a bit hyper, just looking at his face I can see he is a little rascal but a much loved one I am sure.

My two mutts.

The brown one is about as good a worthless dog as one can ask for. She's been very bright and knows what she can get away with. Never pushy but always heading for her goal. Over 15 yrs old in this picture. Her name is Mud. i brought her home from a friends house who found her stray. She'd been abused and you couldn't raise a hand or she'd cower about 1 yr old. Normally I'm concerned about finding the owner, this time I didn't see the point as it could only lead to a good dragin behind the dodge. When I told Mrs. Watson it was our new dog She mentioned that "both your names is mud" hers stuck. She got along well with the aged dog of the time BoBo. BoBo was part Black and tan coon hound and part huskey. His philosophy was "I like you if you don't step on me" indoors. He really liked to go to the beach, and run. I digress. Mud was the first dog ever to get on the bed. she'd get on it and "off" she'd get down. Next morning you'd wake up with a foot warmer. part of her earlier abuse involved her ears. If she knew and trusted you you were fine. If she didn't and you touched them she'd yelp like you were spinnin her around by them. They are very velvety and draw the fingers to them. My mom was visiting (about 10 yrs ago) and touched them they both freaked out. I'll take that moment to my grave in vivicolor.

Ah the pup, bed sneakin, little whelp. Had no problem house breaking, she just followed the old dog. She picked up some of the good and some of the bad. Very little bad to be picked up so I think she'll do. She's about 1/2 scale and that's fine older I get the less I want to lift an 80 pound dog. We also have a 10yr old 15 pound tom cat. The cat perceives the pup to be a chance to get off the bottom rung of the pecking order. The pup seems to see the cat as an amusing play thing. Mrs. Watson sees herself as moderator. I just see myself as mostly amused.

BTW Mrs. M I didn't really pick up on the fact that Charlie was visiting you. spoil him! When your son gets him home in his evironment , it fixes itself pretty easy. When I travel with mine they aren't allowed on the funiture same as home. (my mom wants them to). I never worry about beggin' where their bowls are when I travel. As soon as we get home the dogs go to their food dishes, life becomes normal. Unless you say OOPs and then they come in a hurry  .

Hi Sue,
Yes, Charlie is a Miniature Pinscher. Eddie wants me to admit that I love Charlie. Yes, I like him because all my family love him at first sight. I was the only one who did not want any dog in my home. My husband was the one who allowed my first son to have Charlie. Now, my son feels that Charlie is lonely, and he wants to have an other dog so that Charlie can play with. I told him that one dog is enough already. Because my first son is a married man now. What happen ? when he has a child in the future. Who will take care what ? And I don't think that a dog can play with a baby. I am just looking into a long term situation. I am afraid that the dog can be dangerous to the baby and small child. To me, the family members are always on top of the priority list in life.

Hi Steve,
My son has his own place now. When he come to visite us, he always bring Charlie with him that is what I mean Charlie was visiting us. My son has his own place about 5 miles away from my home. My son started to have Charlie when he still lived with us that was the reason that I did not want any dog in my home. Charlie was not well trained so he made a mess. When I gave the human's food to Charlie, my son told me that it was bad for Charlie that was why I said my son just spoiled Charlie. To me, dog can eat whatever beside it tast better than dog's food. After Sue explained to me about how to take care dog, I understand, now.

Hi All :D
One of my chihuahua's lucy used to like raw vegetables, another called mindy used to love a saucer of tea and would try and drink out of a mug if anyone was stupid enough to leave one where she could get it, but only if it had tea in it.
The really clever thing mindy used to do was at christmas time I would hang those chocolate ornaments on the tree and she would manage to get them off and unwrap the foil and share them with the other chihuahua's.
Everytime she unwrapped one a dog would take it, they seemed to have a pecking order for taking the chocolate and when they all had one mindy would eat hers.
I had to put a stop to it though as dogs should not eat human chocolate, but I was amazed at the thinking process that went into getting the chocs off of the tree because she only weighed about 2 pounds and was very small, then getting the foil off and then distributing them to the other dogs. Amazing!!
