notaclue, welcome to the town! For me, if he got a raptor 50, why don't you get a raptor 90? Bigger and better :) Just kidding - if you want just to have fun, you sounded like a coacial helicopter which is easy for a beginnger to fly. Blade CX, Esky Lama, Vortex 37 just to name a few or you can go with a micro heli like Blade CP or Esky Honeybee CP. You bodyfriend should appreciate your effort getting into the hobby he loves. I need to ask my wife to do the same (she is reading it).

Are your in the Uk ? Have a look at this link.
http://www.jperkinsdistribution.co.uk/detail.php?JPNO=6600040&activepage=1&Navmain=Helicopters&subcatname=Kits%20-%20Twister
It is one of the small 'scale' twin rotor indoor helis that was in Eddie's list. If your in the US, you have more choice than us in the UK !
It comes all up and ready to fly, I have larger helis the same as your boyfriend but these are still fun to fly and you don't need to leave the house! Also good for wet and windy days ! I will also bet you he will want to fly it and 'show you how to fly'

Then again it sounds like you may just want a basic understanding of it all so when he goes off on a speel tou don't just knod your head and try to guess whether to say "that's nice" or "bummer"?
If so the EHBG (electric helicopter beginners guide) would make a good reference but a bit boring reading. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=477304 Not knocking it but it has evolved (v16 now) over a long period of time and is pretty "chunky" and text book ish. Great nuts n bolts and specific info on most helis.
More entertaining reading that will give you some idea of what is involved (with a lot less nuts n bolts) is "Radd's school of rotary flight" http://www.dream-models.com/eco/flying-index.html
last but not least helitown has a newb page to look through. http://www.helitown.com/Newbie.htm
That should be helpfull even beyond the point of deciding if you want one yourself.
