Goodness knows where the first tentative lift off will be, but it will be soon.

Hey Neil, I can't wait to hear your first lift off. Make sure to check your hands after the first flight. Mine were sweating and trembling.

Wait a few months you'll be taking the weights out of the subrotor, moving the Z links to the inner holes, and wanting cyclic servos with more throw. :D. It's a real pussy cat like it is. A genuine stick banging, hands off hovering trainer. Though hovering in the living room takes big ole brassuns. A 1Kg heli has to get some serious air currents moving.

In the name of health and safety I always ensure I am wearing my steel toe cap slippers before flying (skidding).

Outside would be worse. 90mph winds measured in the UK today.

There was a fair old draft in my front room too, and it wasn't all coming from the heli

I am a bit superstitious with things like this, and to have someone there watching with a camera is to me courting disaster.

I will crash soon enough, I don't need a camera there to encourage me further :D

Take your time Niel. Though I know it is unavoidable but we would be sad to hear your first crash. Only two of us here so far can video their own flights - Thanh and Steve. When I focuss to check the balde tracking during flight, I almost crash a couple times.

CopyCat! :D

Congratulations. Did you get that first real JA-ZING when you realize you are hovering and the thing is in control?

My attempt to copy was a mere shadow by comparison. Mind you, it was either the tree or run slap into the side of my garden shed

It was very nerve wracking getting it off the ground for the first time, it's a very 'now or never' moment.

After I landed for the first time there was a real sense of exhilaration, followed by a major hand shaking moment. It's very addictive, even after a pretty hard tumble, I just grabbed the poor thing up, straightened the blades and slapped it on the ground for another go. The tail stand was very cool though and exactly the same as the sim. Quite surreal really.

Lots of 'if only's' to sort out now. Next session I will at least know how to get it off the ground :D

My first son did the same as you NeilM ! After he flew for awhile and the battery went low, he still wanted to go for anther round. Last Saturday he tried to land on the sofa, but he almost broke our Blade CX.

I would be pleased to land on the same spot I took off from at the moment or in fact almost anywhere safe. That is what caused one or two of my hairier moments, trying to get back on station.

It is a great challenge, but I am very glad to have finally got off the ground, at least I have taken the first step :)

Great! You got the hovering JAZZ. You get little installments of it on each learning milestone. Next big dose is when you are nose in and not crashing.

I wouldn't worry much about a slight vibe. Like tail / landing gear buzzing a bit after a mild crash. Fold the blades and move them up and down often makes it go away. Sometimes the lead/lag or flap joints get a little out from where they need to be. Also always remember to check the Z links after a rough landing. It'll still fly with one but will definately indicate that something ain't right.

I've never had much luck balancing the blades on a Corona. I usually just put the heaviest blade on the side of the feathering plate with the big cutout for the subrotor link. Even then I usually end up adding a wrap of electrical tape mid length. I "dynamic balance by guesstimation" which is a fancy way of saying to wrap 3-4" of electrical tape around a blade at mid length and see if it is better or worse, then try the other if worse. repeat on the subrotor blades after removing from the main. Move it inboard or out board and in some combo with the subrotor. Repeat with 2" piece on the tail blades. in a few seconds you can have it going very smoothly. Once you have it balanced any change is usually the Z links or blade pivots. I've never managed to bend a mainshaft on one in some pretty narly crutch breaking crashes.

Congratulations on the flights, they are very rewarding. Thanks for sharing also.

Steve

NeilM
01-25-2007, 11:22 AM
I checked the mainshaft and blades before 'the big hover' and they were fine. I'll have a look at the Z links.

Take off is a little 'interesting' as the sim heli falls to the right and back and the Corona forward and to the right. Of course as soon as it is a couple of feet up, it stabilises very nicely. So my namby pamby delicate lift offs were actually causing me trouble. Now I get the rotors turning nicely, and whack on some throttle :D

All the attempts and flights so far have been with emoli's. I have three lipo packs here.....they should be fun (not all at the same time of course).

Neil, not sure if you have done elsewhere but post your current heli set-up, am curious.

For balancing the Corona blades I use a blade balancer and micro digital scales which have a good resolution and get them spot on!

I'll post a pic of mega tail fin wobble when I couldn't figure out what was happening (turned out to be my tail belt caused the probs!)

Oh have a 5mm Titanium main shaft doing nothing....!

Nick, as bought from Steve W.

GY-240, HS81, Mega 16-15-3, phx-25 (new style with 3A bec), 2 x BMS 380MG.

Batteries I use either 1800 or 2200 mah 3s lipo or 3s Emoli's supplied by Steve. It flys really well with all of them, although the Moli's are 150 g heavier than the lipo's.

Hmm if you could weight up the Moli's, curious to see how they compare to the GP3300 sticks I have. A bit of weight it good for hovering especially if there is some wind about.

NeilM
01-28-2007, 11:08 AM
3s moli weight 319g.

I'm not sure how that compares, as the only other cells I have here are from my 1/10th scale car racing, 7.2v 2400mah.

The moli was supplied by www.bigerc.com

They are 3000mah, so have PLENTY of go in them :D

Was just reading your last entry. Do you fly into the wind when its blowing a bit. You'll get more stability like that, just like a real machine. I wasn't paying attention to that initially but I am now! Your prolly are already though!

Thanks for the Emoli info

NeilM
02-01-2007, 10:00 AM
Yes Nick I always fly into the wind.

The trouble is that I have some very tall trees at one side of my garden, and the wind often blows over them. I believe that they could be causing some odd turbulence, which is why I was having a hard time yesterday.

No chance to fly today, been out seeing clients all day and just got home.

Still, the weekends on it's way :D :D :D

Relax? I remember when I started I could almost pick the TX up just by the impression of the sticks in my thumbs. I had the "Praying Mantis" stance down pat and Popeye forearms from squeezing the TX. My friend who started about the same time as me was the same. We actually liked taking turns as it gave a chance to recover and not seem like wasting part of a good flying day.

Getting rocked around by wind drafts is good training. It doesn't take long to realize you get puffed one direction or the other and you can bring it back on station. Pretty much means you have started the very basics of FF and you become more secure in the fact that when you get out of shape yaw TI and hover to regroup.

When you get out on a day that is a little past marginal. You'll likely see the thing climbing and lowering throttle don't seem to help. Lower some more and it falls like a shot duck. Just give it a little forward and it loose altitude while going away from you. then just back it to station (or land if it gets to scary).

Then comes a real calm day (or better yet dead calm with very light gusts) and you run into "settling with power" Where you hold station during the light gust and when it stops and you loose transitional lift it settles into it's own rotor wash and starts to descend. More power more decent. on and on. When that happens you know you have hovering down pat because you have to be pretty stationary to stay in your own rotor wash. Just moving a bit any direction gets the heli in clean air and it starts to climb. Coronas are really good at this and it can be great fun to do intentionally. If it starts from like 4-6' altitude it'll self arrest at GE. Very likely to happen when you are concentrating on hovering in exactly one spot and are good at it.

Sorry for the digression but it's some neat trivia I thought you might like. Being self taught also, both of those stumped me for a while, and I thought I was doing something wrong but couldn't figure out what :D .

Steve

NeilM
02-02-2007, 05:25 AM
The only reason I am concerned about not holding dead on station is due to all the clutter in my garden, which I did not even know was there until I started whizzing around with a heli.

It is weird how something that takes so long to mow in the summer, suddenly shrinks to the size of a postage stamp the second you take off!
Go figure.

I don't get the stick thumb bit, nor cramp in the back of the hands. I did with all that when I started racing 1/8th scale cars. 80MPH real road speed will get to you like that. But I would love to know what it is I'm doing to pull the muscles in the back of my neck. For now, I'll put it down to smiling.

Garden flying is funny with any wind about. It will roll over the top of a fence and give you strange lifts and falls. You are better in field where there is a constant breeze and then you know what to expect !!

Martin

Where's all the fun in that? Don't forget he's running a Corona so a hard landing and a boom strike usually is just pick it up and unfold the rotors and go again :D It's perfect for us "on call" guys just rush a landing and pick up the phone. Unplug during small talk. 8) Clients get the impression you are patently awaiting a chance to serve them when infact you are enjoying the day and having big fun!

Steve

NeilM
02-02-2007, 10:45 AM
You're both right. I DO get some very odd wind affects and I DO need to join the local club (if only they would reply to my e-mails). But at the same time if I did not fly in the garden I would only get a fraction of the stick time I am getting now.

Yes it is disconcerting when the heli hits the deck or climbs or heads at speed for a tree, but my reaction time is usually more than quick enough to catch it. Yes I do get very fed up with heavy landings and tip overs, but that's why I fly a Corona. I know if it had been almost anything else, I could not have afforded all the repair bills (at the very least half a dozen blades and a flybar or five).

I intend to have a bash on a large open area just up the road from my house, so we'll see what that is like, less intense I suspect, although there are always other peoples gardens to accidentally fly into

Neil

Hee Hee I can't wait to see what the club thinks of the Corona :D . They'll probably laugh at you until the 1st crash and you walk over set it back on it's skids and go again. Then they'll maybe start to get it.

Then again some places I've taken mine it was just considered the neatest thing. One thing is for sure I always get treated like a newby until they see me flying around low and fast, slow piros and nose in hovering. On the other hand I show up with an X400 or the Freestyle and they seem disappointed I can't meet their expectations of 3D.

CRASH!!! I don't crash. I merely perform....alternative landings :D

I saw a video of a guy flying a very neat BT Corona. If I could fly mine like that, then I would have no problems with them.

The fact that they ALL fly Rap 30's means they will not have a clue what the Corona is. That'll keep em guessing for a bit :D

Those are the motors I want to get my hands on, especially the TT2380, which seems ideal. They are both Z-Power motors, but I have not yet matched up specs to Z-power types. I suppose it does not really matter as long as the motor does the job.

Hey Neil. Good to see you are getting adventurous with the Corona. While not a fiddly heli the corona tends to try the patience like that. Seems to be trouble free for a very nice long time and then just start with little trifling problems on the most gorgeous days. I haven't been able to figure it out.

The tail wires will loosen up over time so a periodic retighten is called for. I always just loosened and tightened one screw a couple times and then repeat with the other. I think the loosening and tightening on the same spot increases the depth of the divot the set screw holds on and gives a better grip. It's hard to keep those big horking blades from contacting something.

Lite ply makes a good rudder. An improvement on it is to cover it with the thin real CF veneer that the hot rodders use on covering dash boards etc. I bought some .2mm self adhesive 12' x 12" for a song. Stick it on and iron it to set the glue. It can be cut with scissors.

I just started using an alternate method of affixing the rudders using the 2 hole boom clamps for the AL crutch LMH-76015 and should do a fine job of holding the rudder with limited fiddling.

NeilM
04-07-2007, 09:58 AM
I think I have to take some of the credit for the tail drive problems. Flying NI and side on, I had quite a few heavy landings / mild crashes, and I guess I must have clouted the tail blades maybe once too often.

Nice idea with the tail fin fixing and the CF iron on, I'll try both of them.

I don't know how the last owner flew it, but he did. Been through all the vital bearings with FP10, which is hi speed air tool oil. A tiny drop on the end of a pin works wonders and the swash plate REALLY needed it. Reminded me of the bottom bracket on a neglected mountain bike

Say 'Hi' to The Broker from me
Hi Neil and I hear you have a new heli :D ....its called a Piccolo Fun I believe, well I dont know the heli myself and am not even sure what it looks like, I will probably have to do a google search to find a pic I suppose or I could wait for you to post one, :D :D
I found just the thing for your heli Neil http://www.ikarus-modellbau.de/onlineshop/usa/index.php?sid=b369eed13c9204dc0f19a64df525fd8b&cl=details&cnid=226&anid=4961

Martin, I am stunned, what sad news.

Sue, Huey eh? " Charlie don't surf " I think is the appropriate film quote.

I am SO glad I did not try to start flying with this heli. I know it has had a life before me, and has been well used, but I can't keep it pinned in one place, and it has spent so much time on its side, I have even considered makeshift training gear.
Serious
I think this quote makes the point admirably that it is very important to pick the right heli to start to learn on.
Some heli's are just NOT suitable for begginers to start with.
Of course when they are in the capable hands of someone like Neil then its ok cos he knows what to expect and realises that its the heli at fault not him, :D

Not so serious
I am writing this small so no-one will see it, are you sure its not your fault Neil

That is a very true statement Sue, and I am getting the Piccolo sorted little by little. The easiest way to figure out what is going on is to punch the throttle and get the heli 3 to 4 feet up, as there is safety (to a degree) in altitude. I have had trouble with it side slipping all the time, much like some of the simulator helis do, they seem to fall forward and to one side.

If I did not know what was causing the heli to do this, I would do a lot of damage to it and get very fed up.

In answer to your teeny tiny letters Sue. Some of it is bound to be me, but I'm not about to admit that in publi........... oh!

Thats good neil :D however don't you go putting that Huey fuse I like on the Piccolo till its all sorted ok, cos to crash is forgivable but to crash a UH1 is unthinkable

You may be tempted to answer along the lines of "I was never going to put that fuse on anyway" but Neil I ask you is it worth saying something you will painfully regret

the affects of walls and furniture on air circulation and currents

This is the really big downside to flying indoors unless you are in a hall or similar. The wash from furniture creates a maelstrom of currents and it is for this reason I think its only really possibe to fly a co-axial indoors.
But I'm sure there will be a calm period over the weekend to try the Piccolo out Neil :D :D

Yes, yes, I know. It was early and I was only on my fourth coffee of the day...too much work, not enough sleep......

There is nothing wrong with red...Ferraris are red, ya wouldn't turn one of them away now would you? Especially with the prancing horse emblem on the bonnet (yellow and black..nice. Yellow and black on red...hmmmm).

ps For all not in the know, a bonnet is a hood, and a boot is a trunk, a wing is a fender and we use petrol not gas.

Red is the color of aggression and passion so most men like it...I would rather have black and silver myself 8) 8)
Ferrari does have a nice horse emblem but it would annoy me because its not anotomically correct and I am fussy about that sort of thing :D :D

ps For all not in the know, a bonnet is a hood, and a boot is a trunk, a wing is a fender and we use petrol not gas.
A bonnet is a small hat a baby wears, boots are something I wear to the more select parties :D , a wing belongs to a bird and a petrol is a bird

Red is not the colour of all that stuff, it's just ...red.

To be honest, I'm not keen on red cars, I'm more of a gunmetal type.

Sue, please tell me you don't drive a silver people carrier or a silver or black Ford Focus. My apologies in advance to any sensible forum members or visitors who drive such vehicles well....for you are in the smallest minority group known to man.

As for all the other stuff, I used to drive a 1965 and then a 69 Ford Mustang, and in ordering parts from the US, I learned to speak fluent 'American auto'. Ask them for a bonnet catch...blank, hood catch, you'll get an answer.

Why is it called Petrol? (Either the bird or the fuel).

Neil my dissapointment is overwhelming but I know you don't really mean that..nothing is ever as it seems even a color

Sue, please tell me you don't drive a silver people carrier or a silver or black Ford Focus.

Neil I drive a beat up Ford Fiesta, color ...dark blue and I have never been pretentious and I can't be impressed and a car is just a car..even if its a red one

I drive a beat up Ford Fiesta

Oh thank goodness for that. As you know, I drive a lot with my work, and the particular vehicles mentioned are noticeable in the frequency with which they cut up, undertake, manoeuvre without indicate and a whole host of other disquieting things.

Did you know that in Japan, red is the colour of criminals

Anyway, my Corona is yellow, white and black carbon finish, my FP is white and my car in gunmetal grey...oh, my field box is red, but that's so I don't lose it!
